FILIPINA ARTIST EXPRESSES PERSPECTIVE ON CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, HOLDS SOLO EXHIBIT FOR ART TREK15

(Singapore, 04 October 2023) — Art Trek 15 continues with the opening of the solo exhibition of Singapore-based Filipina artist and educator, Ms. Precious Nakpil-Lai, on 29 September 2023 at the Philippine Embassy.

Entitled “In a Kaleidoscope World: Looking through the lenses of children and young adults with autism”, Ms. Nakpil-Lai’s solo painting exhibit, which runs until 11 October 2023,  is  not just a showcase of her artistic talent but also serves as  a heartfelt celebration of her journey as a special education teacher and an advocate for diversity and inclusion. It is a tribute to the students she had worked with and a testament to the transformative power of education and art in building a more inclusive society.

Every child deserves love and acceptance,”  Precious remarked. . The program for the exhibit opening , designed to highlight the importance of special education and understanding autism, featured performances of families whose members and friends deal with autism and special needs.  Julia Kirsten and her brother Jon Curt, who has autism, sang Unstoppable. A heartfelt video message from one of Precious’ past students was also presented.

The event’s special guest, Karasi Chandramogan, is  a special education teacher whose brother has autism. She shared that children can learn in any situation when provided with the right tools, including a support system, for them to reach their full potential and become independent and productive members of society. 

The granddaughter of a National Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil, Precious was able to refine her knowledge and skills in painting and found her style and personality as a realist impressionist artist with the help of her mentor, Mr Fernando Sena. It was through his team of artists that Precious was able to exhibit some of her works in various places in the Philippines. In 2011, she completed her master’s degree on Special Education at the University of the Philippines with the thesis entitled “Painting Workshop to Enhance Self Concept among Children and Young Adults with Autism”.
