12 October 2021 – Philippine Ambassador to Singapore H.E. Joseph del Mar Yap witnessed the renewal of the MOU between Infrastructure Asia (IA) of Singapore, represented by its Executive Director Seth Tan, and the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Center of the Philippines, represented by Executive Director and Undersecretary Ferdinand Pecson, in a virtual ceremony on 11 October 2021.
Singapore Ambassador to the Philippines Gerard Ho also witnessed the event.
The MOU was one of the agreements signed in the presence of President Halimah Yacob and President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during the former’s state visit to the Philippines in September 2019. The state visit was the culminating activity of the year-round commemoration of the golden jubilee of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Singapore.
In his congratulatory remarks, Ambassador Yap, who was present at the signing of the original MOU in 2019, shared that he felt deeply honored to again witness the continuing collaboration between the two institutions in such critical areas as health care, waste management, and water supply. He wished PPP and IA success as they help the country take a momentous step towards economic growth, resilience, and sustainability.
Infrastructure projects are deemed indispensable to the Philippines’ road to modernity and prosperity as they open doors to more efficient delivery of other vital government services and provide critical support to its recovery efforts. The Philippine government plans to implement Php1.7 trillion worth of infrastructure projects, equivalent to 5.9 percent of its GDP, in 2021.
The renewal of the MOU is expected to facilitate the implementation of PPP projects through Infrastructure Asia’s assistance in PPP’s capacity building and policy formulation activities.
