PRESS RELEASE
PR-018-2024

(11 March 2024, Singapore) – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD). The celebration includes the launch of the Embassy’s National Women’s Month (NWM) Photobooth Corner and giving of NWM tokens to its female clients.

The IWD, which is the highlight of the Philippine’s commemoration of the NWM, is an annual global campaign that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political milestones of women. The United Nations adopted the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” for this year’s advocacy, which runs parallel with the Philippines’ NWM sub-theme “Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas” that calls for a society where women are unhindered by gender biases and discriminatory stereotypes.

It was in 1977 when the UN officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day. But the celebration of women’s achievements goes back to 1909 when the Socialist Party of America declared February 28 as National Woman’s Day in honor of the 15,000 women who marched through New York City in 1908 demanding shorter working hours, better pay and voting rights. Learn more about the IWD’s history by clicking this link.

The Filipino community in Singapore are strongly encouraged to participate in the NWM and IWD campaign by sharing their messages of support through the Embassy’s National Women’s Month Photobooth Corner. END.
