123rd INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS OF THE PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN SINGAPORE KICKS OFF WITH A VIRTUAL FLAG RAISING CEREMONY

Singapore – Today, 12 June 2021, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore held its flag-raising ceremony at the Chancery in 20 Nassim Road to kick off its three-part virtual celebration of the 123rd anniversary of Philippine Independence.

The flag-raising ceremony started at eight in the morning and was streamed online via the Embassy’s official Facebook page to allow the Filipino Community in Singapore to participate virtually in the Independence Day celebrations. In-person participation of the Filipino Community in the annual flag-raising ceremony is not yet feasible because of the heightened restrictions that are still in effect due to the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

In his Independence Day speech, Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Joseph del Mar Yap paid tribute to the bravery of the nation’s heroes who fought for the inherent right to freedom and independence of the Filipino people.

Under this year’s theme “Diwa ng Kalayaan sa Pagkakaisa at Paghilom ng Bayan”, Ambassador Yap stated that in the face of this global health crisis, freedom has taken on a new meaning.

“Indeed, in this age of the pandemic, the battlefield has changed. The enemy is very different from the antagonists of Jose Rizal’s novels. The arsenals of war have taken the form of test kits, life-saving equipment and social distancing measures. Our commitment to this new struggle for freedom and independence from the pandemic takes the most mundane of forms such as our adherence to the current safety management measures, health protocols, and travel restrictions,” the Ambassador said.

The Ambassador further encouraged the Filipino Community to stay united in the drawn-out war against the COVID-19 pandemic. He said that if Filipinos and other members of the global community will stay united, a stronger nation and world will emerge.

Ambassador Yap was joined by the officers of the Philippine Embassy and heads of attached agencies in the simple flag-raising ceremony which was performed under strict safe management measures.

The Embassy’s next activity is the National Day Reception which will be held on 15 June 2021, 5 PM, SGT. The third part of the celebration will be on 20 June 2021 with Pagdiriwang 2021. These virtual activities will also be streamed on the Philippine Embassy’s Facebook page.

This year’s three-part virtual Independence Day celebrations will also include performances highlighting various aspects of Philippine culture and world-class Filipino talents. – END
