The Philippine Embassy in Singapore conducted the seminar, “ASEAN and the ASEAN Economic Community: An Overview” at Lavender Room, Level 3, Orchard Hotel, Singapore, on Saturday, 14 November 2015. The activity, participated by 54 personnel of the Embassy and the attached agencies, was aimed to provide the participants with correct and updated information on ASEAN to place them in a position to contribute in raising public awareness and help generate support for PHL’s ASEAN involvement as well as learn ways how to help PHL take full advantage of its membership in the regional grouping.  There were three (3) speakers during the seminar, namely: First Secretary and Consul J. Anthony A. Reyes – history and membership of ASEAN, its structures and functions and an overview on PHL’s participation in the organization; Commercial Counsellor Glenn T. Peñaranda – the challenges and opportunities of the ASEAN Economic Community and the PHL game plan; and Labor Attaché Ramon Tionloc Jr. – labor mobility in ASEAN. In opening the activity, Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Antonio A. Morales underscored the importance of ASEAN for PHL and the seminar is a right start towards the capacity-building of the personnel of the Embassy and the attached agencies. It was emphasized that being in the front lines, they are in a position to help generate public interest and support to PHL’s involvement in ASEAN. To be able to this effectively, personnel should be equipped with the right knowledge and updated information for them to share with the public particularly on what ASEAN is all about, how the Philippines, its businesses and people can benefit and take advantage of the opportunities that are available as well as face the challenges that may arise out of the ASEAN integration process.
