8 August 2023, Singapore – In celebration of the 56th ASEAN Day today, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, led by Ambassador Medardo G. Macaraig, joined the ASEAN Day Fun Walk this morning at the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
The activity was organized by the Embassy of Indonesia, current chair of ASEAN for 2023, to signify solidarity and unity among ASEAN Member States, and to reinforce the regional organization’s centrality and reliability. The Fun Walk was led by Indonesian Ambassador Suryo Pratomo and Director-General Rajpal Singh of the ASEAN Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Singapore, as the Guest of Honor.
The morning activity was participated in by officials from the MFA, Heads of Missions and personnel of the Embassies and High Commissions of ASEAN Member States in Singapore, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. Timor Leste, poised to be the 11th Member of ASEAN, was also represented in the walk by its Embassy officials.
The Fun Walk participants also had the opportunity to celebrate ASEAN brotherhood and to bond over breakfast of bubur ayam, Indonesia’s chicken porridge, courtesy of the Indonesian Embassy.
The Philippine Embassy expresses support for Indonesia, as Chair and fellow founding member of ASEAN. This year’s chairmanship theme is ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.
ASEAN, or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam, Viet Nam, Lao PDR and Myanmar, and Cambodia joined the following years. (END)
