PHILIPPINES AND SINGAPORE CONVENE THE 5TH ROUND OF INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS ON BILATERAL RELATIONS

The Philippines and Singapore successfully convened the 5th Informal Consultations on the Philippines-Singapore Action Plan (IC-PSAP) on 14 July 2021. Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for Asia and Pacific Affairs Nathaniel G. Imperial and Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Permanent Secretary Ng Teck Hean co-chaired the three-hour virtual consultations.

In his opening remarks, Assistant Secretary Imperial said that holding the 5th IC-PSAP in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic serves as a testament to the unstinting desire of the Philippines and Singapore to prevail over challenges, get on with important tasks despite current constraints, and advance bilateral collaboration in the new normal.

Both sides discussed projects and opportunities for further cooperation in defence and security, economic cooperation, information technology, cultural and people-to-people exchanges. In addition, the co-chairs agreed on expanding PH-SG collaboration to novel and emerging areas such as the agri-food industry, innovation and start-ups, Industry 4.0 and the digital economy, waste and water management, smart cities and urban solutions. There was also agreement to further increase collaboration in healthcare, vaccine development, and COVID-19 technology solutions.

PH and SG also had a comprehensive discussion on regional and international developments, where both recognized and reaffirmed the critical and central role of ASEAN and international law in ensuring the peace, security, stability and prosperity of the region.

Operationalized on 14 December 1998, the IC-PSAP is envisioned to provide a consolidated framework that will facilitate the continuous strengthening of PH-SG relations. END
