The Hollywood blockbuster film “Pirates of the Caribbean” inspired the look of the Royal Albatross ship made possible by 40 Filipinos involved in the design and reconstruction of the ship.

28 March 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore, led by Ambassador Joseph Del Mar Yap, were treated to world-class Filipino ingenuity when they were invited by the Royal Albatross to tour their pirate-inspired luxury tall ship and experience a sunset cruise around Sentosa last 19 February.

The crew, majority of which were Filipinos, personally welcomed Ambassador Yap and the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO).

According to the CEO, Mr. Pete Pela, the Royal Albatross was a product of Filipino craftsmanship and artistry who meticulously toiled in transforming the yacht to achieve its pirate-inspired look. The designer behind the Hollywood blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean”, Jim Barry, oversaw the mast and rigging design, fabrication, apprentice training, and production management.

During the reconstruction, around 40 Filipinos were hired to work in Malaysia for the design up to the construction itself.

Upon arrival in Singapore after undergoing a revamp of the ship’s design in Malaysia for more than 2 years, the management decided to retain 8 Filipinos to be part of the crew given their familiarity already with the ship. Half of these Filipinos were carpenters.

Royal Albatross started its operations in Singapore in 2015, although its parent company, Tall Ship Adventures Pte Ltd, was founded in 2008. It is considered a leader in the Asian Super yacht industry, providing luxurious cruises, hosting corporate events and entertainment, and organizing private charters.

“I have been with the company for almost a decade and I can’t imagine myself working for a company other than the Royal Albatross. I consider my job and colleagues as my home and family,” Allan Bruno said, a Filipino who is the Associate Director for Support and System, as well as being an architect by profession.

“I salute the management of the Royal Albatross for providing employment opportunities for our kababayans. The ship is indeed a testament to the artistic talent of Filipinos and now we get to experience Filipino hospitality through their service as members of the sailing crew,” Ambassador Yap said.
