PRESS RELEASE

PR-003-2023

8 January 2023, Singapore – The Philippine Embassy and the Migrant Workers Office-Singapore attended the launch of the AEA(S) Fun Club, a new initiative of the Association of Employment Agencies (Singapore) on 8 January 2023 at 10 Square in Orchard Central. The  initiative was done in partnership with a non-profit organization called The Rice Company Limited (TRCL). The AEA(S) Fun Club offers arts and creative activities, which include dance therapy workshops, percussion sessions, and talks about health and self-development.

The creation of the club is in response to new legislation effective 1 January 2023 that makes it compulsory for all employers to give MDWs at least one rest day a month, and neither party can ask to drop this requirement in favor of compensation.

K Jayaprema, president of AEA(S), acknowledged that there is a lack of organized activities for MDWs on their rest days, especially since the rest days cannot be compensated. The Fun Club helps address this gap by organizing a series of free weekly activities in the form of a club that could serve as a trusted and safe enclave for MDWs to rest and recharge from their work, as well as interact with their own network of friends, she added (END).
