With large social gatherings and events still tightly regulated, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, led by Ambassador Joseph del Mar Yap hosted its annual Diplomatic Reception virtually via its social media platforms on 15 June 2021, at 5:00 P.M. (SGT), as part of the commemoration of the 123rd anniversary of Philippine Independence.
Honourable Minister Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law graced the Diplomatic Reception as the Guest of Honor and representative of the Singapore Government.
In their remarks, Ambassador Yap and Minister Tong both recognized the enduring partnership between the Philippines and Singapore, especially on trade and investment, and highlighted the activities during the successful celebration of the Golden Jubilee of PH-SG diplomatic relations in 2019 which was capped by the State Visit of H.E. President Halimah Yacob to the Philippines.
Making reference to the refreshed Alkaff Bridge which was painted by the late Filipino artist Pacita Abad, Minister Tong said that “the bright colours of Pacita’s beautiful artwork are a bold and vibrant epitome” of the two countries’ enduring friendship.
“Aside from our economic partnership, the Philippines is also committed to further cultivating our cooperation with Singapore in the areas of defense and security, digital technology, health, disaster risk management, and cultural cooperation,” Ambassador Yap said. The Ambassador also recognized the importance of bilateral cooperation in the area of healthcare and expressed his profound appreciation to Singapore for its generous assistance in the Philippines’ battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s virtual diplomatic reception also included a short cultural presentation which highlighted various aspects of Philippine culture.
