The Philippine Embassy in Singapore on Saturday, 21 January 2017, conducted a symbolic launching of the Philippine 2017 chairmanship of ASEAN during the first Filipino Community (Filcom) leaders meeting at the Philippine Bayanihan Centre. The event was highlighted by a showing of the official video of the Philippine chairmanship.
Ambassador Morales called on Filcom leaders to help raise public awareness on ASEAN, in general, with emphasis on the benefits and opportunities that it has for every citizen in the region, and on the Philippine chairmanship, in particular. He noted that the year 2017 is significant as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the association.
The Filcom leaders meeting is convened every other month of the year alternating with the Post-arrival Orientation Seminar (PAOS) for newly-arrived overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), which is organized by the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO).
As per practice, heads of the various sections of the Philippine Embassy and the attached agencies informed the participants on developments as well their plans for their respective jurisdictions. Representatives of Filcom organization and other entities were given the opportunity to speak and make announcements.
During the meeting, Ambassador Morales conveyed his gratitude to the Filcom leaders for their generous support to the Philippine Embassy as he looked forward to an even stronger partnership in 2017. He distributed the certificates of appreciation to Filcom volunteers who assisted the Embassy in organizing the Filcom meeting with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at The Max Pavilion on 16 December 2016. The meeting was preceded by the “Kapihan” and concluded with a networking lunch arranged by POLO/OWWA Singapore. The next Filcom Leaders’ Meeting is scheduled in March 2017 at the public area of the Philippine Embassy at Nassim Road Singapore.
