The Philippine Embassy in Singapore held a private screening of the critically-acclaimed film, “Remittance” at the Ambassador’s Residence on 23 June 2017, in celebration of Filipino Migrant Workers’ Day. Present during the event were one of the movie’s directors, Mr. Patrick Daly, Ms. Angela Barotia, who played the leading role, and other Singapore-based Filipino actors.

At the movie’s core is the character of Marie (played by Ms. Barotia), who takes a job as a household service worker in Singapore to support her family in the Philippines. While experiencing many struggles away from her family, Marie also begins to build a new life in Singapore. Recurring themes such as choosing between fulfilling family obligations against realizing personal aspirations and maintaining resilience amidst seemingly endless cycle of hardships made the film a realistic foray into the lives of everyday Overseas Filipino Workers.

The screening was attended by various Filipino community leaders and members, and Embassy personnel.

“Remittance” was written and directed by Patrick Daly and Joel Fendelman, and won several international film festival awards.
