At the sidelines of the 5th Singapore Dialogue on Sustainable World Resources on 18 May 2018, Senator Loren Legarda, Chair of the Senate Committees on Climate Change, Finance and Foreign Relations, met with Singapore Environment Minister Masagos Zulkifli.
Minister Zulkifli commended Senator Legarda for her long-standing advocacy for the environment and for her extensive efforts in initiating legislation on environmental protection and climate change.
Senator Legarda stressed to Min. Zulkifli the need for ASEAN countries to veer away from coal by crafting important policies, learning from best practices and sharing information on climate financing or climate-smart initiatives. Minister Zulkifli also discussed with Senator Legarda the various climate-smart initiatives that Singapore had undertaken to reduce its carbon emission, including the principles behind the city-state’s carbon taxation policy.
The Senator reiterated to Minister Zulkifli that as chair of the ASEAN this year, Singapore is expected to push for a stronger regional position on carbon pricing and green growth.
They also agreed to further explore bilateral capacity-building initiatives.
