SINGAPORE, 17 February 2025 – In a farewell call on the Philippine Ambassador Medardo G. Macaraig this morning, outgoing Executive Director Krishnaswamy Natarajan of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia-Information Sharing Centre (ReCAAP-ISC), thanked the Philippines for its support of the Centre as well as its cooperation in enhancing maritime security and addressing emerging challenges in the maritime sector.
During the call, Ambassador Macaraig and Executive Director Natarajan discussed key challenges in the maritime industry, including the global shortage of seafarers, the evolving role of technology in maritime careers, the growing demand for maritime law professionals, and the socio-economic factors fueling piracy.
Executive Director Natarajan, who will conclude his three-year term on 31 March 2025, also recognized the potential of the Philippines, a leading maritime nation, for its potential in shaping maritime law and championing environmental protection. He highlighted the Philippine Coast Guard’s recent downgrade the threat level of crew abductions in the Sulu-Celebes Sea from ‘MODERATE LOW’ to ‘LOW’ as a testament to the Philippines’ leadership in promoting maritime security in the region.
