SINGAPORE, 25 July 2024 – Filipino students Nathan Y. Gohoc and Carsten Edmund S. Ang won as Overall Champion for Grade 4, and Overall First Runner-Up for Grade 7, respectively, during the tenth-year run of the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) on 21 July 2024.
The Philippine contingent is composed of fifty-eight (58) Grades 1 to 12 students from various elementary and high schools in the Philippines. They were accompanied by their parents and teachers, under the supervision of the President of Asian MathSci League, Inc. (AMSLI), Ms. Rechilda P. Villame.
All the students showcased their problem-solving skills in the Olympiad’s individual, team or math warriors’ category. Their talents were recognized during the awards ceremony held on 23 July 2024 at Singapore’s Star Theatre, with Nathan and Carsten getting a coveted overall win at the individual category. They received their medals, trophies and certificates from guest of honor Mr. Goh Is Saktiandi Supaat, Member of Parliament of the Toa Payoh East Constituency.
In his inspirational message to the participants which was streamed during the awards ceremony, Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Medardo G. Macaraig congratulated the delegates for exhibiting not only their prowess and dedication to mathematics, but also their commitment to teamwork and sportsmanship, noting that such skills and values will be instrumental in their endeavors as adults and to their roles as future leaders of the world.
SIMOC is a prestigious annual competition which gathers young math enthusiasts from around the world. This year’s SIMOC run has the highest participant turnout, with around 2,000 students from 32 countries gathering to challenge and expand their intellectual abilities.
