PRESS RELEASE | PR-218-2026

SINGAPORE, 6 July 2026 – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore joins the worldwide flag-raising ceremony in solidarity with the commemoration of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea. This year marks a special milestone as the Philippines commemorates the 10th anniversary of the landmark victory on 12 July 2016.

As part of the commemoration, Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Medardo G. Macaraig led the flag-raising ceremony held at the Embassy grounds at 20 Nassim Road. During the event, Ambassador Macaraig read the message of Secretary Eduardo Oban, Jr., Chair, National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS).

Excerpts from the Message

“This landmark decision reaffirmed what international law has long recognized: that maritime rights and entitlements are determined by law, not by power or coercion. Rendered pursuant to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Award is final and legally binding and remains a lasting affirmation of the rule of law in the maritime domain.”

“A decade later, the Award continues to be recognized and cited in international jurisprudence, reinforcing the rule of law as the strongest foundation for the peaceful settlement of disputes among nations. It likewise affirms the Philippines’ sovereign rights and lawful maritime entitlements under international law.”

In his remarks, Ambassador Macaraig emphasized that the Philippines envisions a South China Sea not as a theater of rivalry, but as a sea of cooperation. Ten years on, the Award is more than a document. It’s a legacy we must uphold and a responsibility we must carry forward.

Through this meaningful flag-raising ceremony, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore reaffirmed its commitment to upholding and defending the Philippines’ sovereign rights through the rule of law.

As we commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award, the Embassy also honors the courage, sovereignty, and resilience of the Filipino people and the unwavering dedication of our uniformed personnel, public servants, fisherfolk, coastal communities, and every Filipino who contributes to protecting our maritime interests.
