PRESS RELEASE | PR-258-2025

13 October 2025, Singapore – As part of its continuing efforts to foster maritime consciousness and environmental stewardship, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore organized a learning journey to the new Singapore Oceanarium on 12 October 2025. The activity served as the culminating event following the Embassy’s observance of the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo), which is celebrated annually in September, to promote appreciation of the Philippines’ maritime heritage and its role as a seafaring and archipelagic nation.

The activity aimed to deepen understanding of the Philippines’ maritime and archipelagic character and to highlight the importance of marine conservation and sustainable ocean management. Through guided exhibits and interactive learning experiences, Embassy personnel were able to explore the concept of evolution and its role in shaping marine life through time, describe the diverse marine habitats found in each ocean layer, and identify the major threats facing the ocean, including pollution, overfishing, and climate change.

Participants were also introduced to the Singapore Oceanarium’s ongoing conservation initiatives, notably its mangrove conservation efforts and coral and fish breeding programs, which have achieved measurable success in supporting marine biodiversity. These initiatives underscore the vital role of scientific innovation and multi-sectoral collaboration in safeguarding the health of the world’s oceans.

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore, H.E. Medardo G. Macaraig, remarked that the activity reflects the Philippines’ shared responsibility and kinship with fellow maritime nations like Singapore in protecting ocean ecosystems. “As a maritime and archipelagic nation, the Philippines’ identity, culture, and future are deeply intertwined with the sea. Learning from Singapore’s marine conservation practices reminds us that sustainable stewardship of our oceans is both a national duty and a global imperative,” he said.

Through this activity, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to fostering public awareness and appreciation of the Philippines’ maritime heritage. Integral to the commemoration of MANA Mo is spotlighting the importance of collective responsibility and regional cooperation in addressing marine environmental challenges, consistent with the Philippines’ vision of a resilient, sustainable, and empowered maritime nation.
