PRESS RELEASE
PR-100-2024
(16 September 2024) – The Philippine Embassy in Singapore, in collaboration with the Gardens by the Bay, unveiled today the Gardens by the Bahay Kubo: A Fiesta of Orchids, the newest orchid display at the Cloud Forest.
The event was graced by Singapore Minister for Manpower, Dr. Tan See Leng, as the Guest of Honor, and Philippine Secretary for Migrant Workers, Hans Leo J. Cacdac. Also in attendance were Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Medardo G. Macaraig, and Mr. Felix Loh, CEO of Gardens by the Bay.
The exhibit, part of the celebrations marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Singapore, is the first collaboration between the Philippine Embassy and the Gardens by the Bay.
During the launch, Ambassador Macaraig emphasized the unique significance of the event, noting that it serves not only as a platform to showcase the natural beauty of Philippine orchids but also as a cultural bridge between Filipinos and Singaporeans. “The orchids we present today symbolize resilience and beauty, much like the relationship between our two countries—strong, growing, and ever-flourishing,” the Ambassador remarked.
Dr. Tan See Leng, on the other hand, highlighted the importance of people-to-people links, noting the contributions of the Filipino community in Singapore as they call Singapore their second home, and the shared cultural values between the two nations, bringing their peoples closer.
This vibrant exhibit, running from 16 September to January 2025, is set against the backdrop of the bahay kubo, the traditional Filipino stilt house, surrounded by stunning Philippine natural landscapes and cultural displays. It highlights the country’s rich orchid biodiversity across different floral zones, from lush lowland rainforests to misty cloud forests, with the majestic waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana), known as the Queen of Orchids, as its centerpiece. Open to the public, the exhibit offers local and international visitors a unique glimpse into the Philippines’ rich biodiversity and vibrant cultural heritage.
As one of the world’s most renowned horticultural hubs, Singapore uses orchids; symbols of beauty, elegance, and resilience, to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration through its orchid diplomacy which underscores the deepening bond between Singapore and the Philippines, while highlighting both countries’ commitment to preserving biodiversity and celebrating cultural exchange.
The exhibit would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of everyone involved, working together in the spirit of bayanihan, especially to the Filipino groups in Singapore who contributed to the launch. Cultural performances were made possible by the Filipino Dance Club through the traditional and modern take of tinikling, while Maison Inabel, Filshopper, ISLA (Pearls from the Philippines), and A&A (HomeLifestyle) showcased a parade of Filipino creativity through intricate weaving, national attire, and handcrafted jewelry. Guests were treated to a boodle fight and drinks by Nanay’s Kitchen, Coffee Estacion, Ube Liqueur, and Yellow Cab Singapore. Lastly, volunteers from HOME (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics) and the Barangay NUS Filipino Cultural Club have been instrumental in making the exhibit a success.
