PH BOLSTERS REGIONAL DEFENSE COOPERATION AT 2025 IISS SHANGRI-LA DIALOGUE SHERPA MEETING

SINGAPORE, 21 January 2025 –  The Philippines actively advanced its commitment to regional defense and security during the 13th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue Sherpa Meeting held on 19–21 January 2025 in Singapore. 

Undersecretary for Strategic Assessment and Planning Ignacio Madriaga of the Department of National Defense led the delegation, delivering key remarks during the session on “Evolving Defense Partnerships and the Regional Security Architecture.” His address emphasized the significance of ASEAN centrality and adherence to international law as cornerstones for peace and stability in the region.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the delegation, which included Lieutenant General Jimmy Larida, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, engaged in bilateral discussions with defense counterparts and stakeholders from Singapore, Australia, the European Union, France, Germany, the Republic of Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom, among others. These dialogues focused on strengthening collaboration in defense and security.

The Philippine Embassy in Singapore, led by Ambassador Medardo Macaraig, together with the Office of the Defense and Armed Forces Attaché-Singapore, played an integral role in supporting the delegation throughout the meeting.

The IISS Shangri-La Dialogue Sherpa Meeting is a key forum for senior defense policymakers, military officials, and experts to discuss Asia-Pacific security challenges and enhance regional defense diplomacy. The 13th meeting featured off-the-record discussions, bilateral exchanges, and a Special Address by Indonesian Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, serving as a preparatory platform for the annual IISS Shangri-La Dialogue scheduled for 30 May–1 June 2025 in Singapore (END).
