PRESS RELEASE
PR-117-2024
#LOOK Ambassador Medardo G. Macaraig receives a copy of the 1734 Murillo Velarde Map as a token of appreciation from Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr., presented, through outgoing Philippine Defense and Armed Forces Attaché (DAFA) Capt. Sherwin E. Respeto PN (GSC), on 27 September 2024 at the Philippine Embassy in Singapore
The 1734 Murillo Velarde Map also called the “Carta Hydrographica Y Chorographica De Las Yslas Filipinas Manila” is the oldest Philippine map which shows that Panatag Shoal or Scarborough Shoal was part of the Philippines’ territory. The map was instrumental in the country’s 2016 arbitration case over the dispute in the West Philippine Sea.
Ambassador Macaraig was delighted to receive the map from Secretary Teodoro during the culmination of the Embassy’s observance of Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month this September. The map will be displayed in the Embassy’s premises.
We congratulate Capt. Respeto for a successful tour of duty and welcome his predecessor, Col. Egberto Dacoscos as new DAFA in Singapore. /END
