As we welcome National Women’s Month this March, join us for a special book talk by Dr. Gene Segarra Navera on Beauty Spectacle: Pageants, Fan Culture, and the Filipino Adoration for Queens on Friday, 13 March 2026, at the Philippine Embassy in Singapore.
Dr. Navera is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for English Language Communication and a Fellow of Tembusu College whose research explores rhetoric, discourse, and popular culture.
In line with the 2026 National Women’s Month theme “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society” and the call to “Lead like the Babaylans, Filipinas!”, his talk will explore women’s agency in pageantry and fan culture, and will highlight women’s voice, leadership and empowerment. #WEcanbeEquALL

About Dr. Navera
Dr. Gene Navera is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director at the National University of Singapore’s Centre for English Language Communication and a Fellow of Tembusu College, with over 20 years of experience in teaching and research. He holds a PhD in English Language Studies from NUS, an MA in Speech Communication from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, and a BA in Communication Arts from UP-Los Baños, where he previously taught and received the Outstanding Teacher Award for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
His scholarship examines rhetoric, discourse, and communication in public life — recently focusing on gender, fan culture, and pageantry, while also serving on several academic editorial boards.
