The Linggo ng Musikang Pilipino, is being observed every last week of July by virtue of Proclamation No. 933 signed on 19 December 2014 by former President Benigno Aquino, Jr., to showcase, recognize, and give importance to music created by Filipinos through Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and to promote pride in our culture, support local musicians, and strengthen the identity of the Filipino people through the art of music.

Based in the Philippines, @Mecosono is a chamber orchestra and mixed ensemble founded in 2017 and formally established in 2018. It has a goal of building a performing arts institute strong in the classical, modern, jazz and contemporary forms of music and other performing arts. The founding members of Mecosono all hail from Rizal (located in the eastern part of Metro Manila), hence the acronym “MECO”, short for “Metro East Chamber Orchestra” and “SONO”, the Latin word for ‘sound.’

Mecosono blends classical training with contemporary styles, performing original works and arrangements. The group clinched the Grand Prize at the highly competitive UNIV Arts Competition in Rome, Italy in 2023. Their piece Sama-sama sa Musika earned a spot as quarterfinalist in Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Kanto Kanta in 2021. Their musical journey has also taken them to  cultural stages in the European cities of Venice, Barcelona, and Madrid. 

The event also serves as a post-celebration of National Culture Consciousness Week, which is observed annually during the first week of July, by virtue of Proclamation No. 1148, s. 1973, aimed at promoting Filipino cultural awareness and appreciation.
