Typhoon Ondoy & Pepeng Donation Drive Update

In a meeting with Filipino community leaders in Singapore, Philippine Ambassador Minda Calaguian-Cruz expressed her “deepest appreciation” to the individuals and organizations that extended their support and assistance to families and communities in the Philippines that were affected by Typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng”.

“The response was overwhelming,” Ambassador Cruz said. “I am grateful for the extraordinary efforts you undertook to give back to those back home who were affected by these typhoons.”

The Ambassador reported that over PhP 8.5 million in personal and corporate donations had been remitted to various humanitarian agencies in the Philippines as of the end of November 2009. Major remittance companies and banks, likewise, contributed to the efforts by waiving remittance fees for donations to selected agencies for typhoon victims.

Individuals and organizations also organized drives for donations in kind, sending back much-needed items like clothing, medicine and foodstuff for distribution to affected communities.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to conduct rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by typhoons.

Those who wish to donate to rehabilitation efforts for communities affected by Typhoon “Ondoy” (International Code Name: Ketsana) and “Pepeng” (International Code Name: Parma) are advised that donations in cash may be remitted through the banks/remittance companies listed below to the following agencies:

Donations in kind should be accompanied with a Deed of Donation (DOD) in order to allow the sending individual or organization to avail of duty-free importation privileges for donated goods.

Please inform the organization you are coordinating with that you will need a letter of acceptance for the relief goods you are sending to the Philippines.

You will also need to execute a deed of donation (DOD) for your shipment, in order to avail of the duty-free importation privilege for donations. Kindly provide us with your e-mail address so that we can send a copy of the pro-forma DOD. You will also need to attach the following documents:

  • Letter of acceptance of receiving organization (indicating that they are aware of and will be present to receive the donated goods)
  • Packing list
  • Bill of lading or airway bill (when available)

Once the DOD has been accomplished, donors may e-mail the Embassy at php@pacific.net.sg, subject line “Donation for Typhoon Victims – Deed of Donation” to set an appointment to have it authenticated.

Donors are discouraged from sending used clothing, which is prohibited for importation into the Philippines under Republic Act 4653, and as reiterated in DSWD’s Omnibus Guidelines in the Management and Processing of Donations.
