Overseas Registration for 2010 Elections Postponed to 1 February 2009
The registration for overseas absentee voters for the 2010 national elections has been postponed by the Philippine Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
Newly appointed Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Minda C. Cruz announced that COMELEC has decided en banc to postpone the start of continuing voter registration for overseas Filipinos from December 1, 2008 to February 1, 2009.
‘The continuing registration for Filipinos overseas starts February 1, 2009 and ends on August 31, 2009 for a total of almost seven months, to give COMELEC and the embassies and consulates ample time to prepare,’ said the ambassador.
Registration overseas will be conducted by Philippine embassies and consulates on behalf of COMELEC in accordance with the Overseas Absentee Voting Act of 2003.
Filipinos who are at least 18 years old or who will be 18 at the time of the elections may apply for registration if they intend to vote in Singapore, provided that they are not disqualified by law.
